The national currency is the LEU (RON) and its subunit is BANI.

Bancnotes have values of 1 leu, 5 lei, 10 lei, 50 lei, 100 lei, 200 lei, 500 lei. – PHOTOS

Coins have values of 1 ban, 5 bani, 10 bani, 50 bani.

Throughout Romania payment can be made in cash or with most major credit and debit cards (Visa, Maestro, Mastercard, American Express, etc)

Exchange

The smoothest way to change currency to LEI is through ATMs. All major credit and debit cards are accepted. The exchange rates are usually good but you will pay a small commission. ATM’s are found in all cities and in some rural areas.

It is also possible to change foreign currency in banks and exchange offices but fees vary. We recommend that you first clarify all details before completing the transaction.

Most hotels, restaurants, shops and supermarkets accept card payments. Check for signs or ask on-site staff. Travelers’ checks are generally more difficult to use.

You can use EURO and US Dollars for tips and other private matters.

Some banks restricts card payments in Romania. To avoid any possible inconvenience, request that your bank remove payment restrictions before travelling to Romania.
